Is professional carpet cleaning worth it, or can you just rent a machine?

What a rental machine does

A rental sprays warm tap water and soap into the carpet and sucks some of it back out. The trouble is the "some." Those machines don't get the water very hot and don't have much suction, so a fair amount of the soap and dirty water stays in the carpet. It also takes a long time to dry, sometimes a day or more.

That leftover soap is the real problem. It's sticky. The carpet looks fine for a week or two, and then the traffic lanes come back darker than before, because the soap is grabbing every bit of dirt that walks across it.

What a truck-mounted machine does differently

A truck-mounted unit heats the water much hotter and has several times the suction. More dirt comes up, more of the water comes back out, and the carpet dries in hours instead of days. The other half of it is the rinse. We go over the carpet a second time with mostly water, so nothing sticky is left behind.

What's down in there

A carpet works like a big filter for your house. In a normal Cleveland home that means sand and grit, winter salt, pet dander, pollen, dust, crumbs and whatever got spilled. The grit is the part that ruins carpet: it's sharp, and every step grinds it against the fibers. Getting it out regularly is a big part of why some carpet lasts 15 years and some looks worn at five.

When renting is fine

• A single small room or a spot you need to deal with today.
• A rental or an older carpet you're replacing soon anyway.
• You're willing to do two rinse passes with plain water and run fans for a day.

When it's worth calling someone

• The whole house, or the stairs and hallways that get the most traffic.
• Pet urine, where the problem is in the pad and a rental won't reach it.
• Carpet that's still under warranty. Most manufacturers want professional hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months.
• Carpet that got dirty again fast after the last time you cleaned it. That's soap residue, and it needs a proper rinse.
